Phonics and Read Write Inc
What is Phonics?
Synthetic phonics is a method of teaching where words are broken up into the smallest units of sound (phonemes). Children learn to make connections between the letters of written texts (graphemes, or letter symbols) and the sounds of spoken language. Synthetic phonics also teaches children how to identify all the phonemes in a word and match them to a letter in order to be able to spell correctly.
Children are taught how to break up words, or decode them, into individual sounds, and then blend all the way through the word.

Teaching Phonics using Read Write Inc
Read Write Inc is a scheme based around the systematic teaching of phonics so children learn to blend their letter sounds quickly and use this method to read.
Learning the sounds and letters form the building blocks of reading and spelling and begin in the Foundation Stage and continue through the school.
On joining the school the children learn their sounds and read simple books called ‘Ditties’. The children then move up through the levels moving groups as they progress. They bring home the book they have been working on each week and we encourage you to read lots of stories to them at home to help build their vocabulary.
