Phonics
Books are matched closely to the sounds that pupils have learned.
We use Read Write Inc. (RWI), a DfE-validated Systematic Synthetic Phonics (SSP) programme, to ensure every child becomes a confident, fluent reader as quickly as possible. Click here for our guide.
-
Our Daily Routine: In EYFS (9:00-9:30) and KS1 (10:20-11:00), phonics is taught daily. Children are grouped by their current progress, ensuring the correct level of challenge. Children have access to the RWI portal, via QR codes, where they can access hundreds of videos to support their phonics journey. Please speak to your child's class teacher to find out more.
-
The "Pure Sounds" Approach: We teach children to use "pure sounds" (m-a-t, not muh-a-tuh) to blend words effortlessly.
-
KS2 Phonics & 'Fresh Start': In KS2, pupils who need further support follow a daily programme from 11:20–11:40 AM using age-appropriate 'Fresh Start' books.
-
Decodable Success: Every phonics book your child brings home (Book Bag Book) is matched to their current phonics level. This prevents guessing and builds genuine reading confidence. In addition to this, children are able to choose books from our library to further develop their love of reading.
-
High Standards: We maintain this through a cycle of weekly staff coaching and external reviews, ensuring that every child receives the best possible start to their reading journey.
