PE
A high-quality PE curriculum is essential for developing not just physical competence, but also the character and wellbeing of every child. Our PE programme is designed to build fitness, fairness, and respect through a diverse range of activities.
Curriculum
Our curriculum is built around core concepts and skills that progress with each child as they move through the school. We utilise a "Spirals" approach, ensuring that key sports and activities—such as Basketball, Football, Gymnastics, and Dance—are revisited. Please find the full curriculum overview at the bottom of the page.
Core Concepts: We focus on competition (with self and others), health, fitness, teamwork, and tactics.
Developing Skills: From EYFS to Year 6, pupils develop agility, balance, coordination, and technique across various disciplines including striking, fielding, and evasion.
Key Vocabulary: We empower students to use professional terminology, such as competence, sustained, dribbling, and flight.
PE Safety & Uniform Guide
To ensure Safe Practice in line with AfPE guidelines, we require all students and staff to follow these safety protocols:
Clothing & Footwear
-
Gymnastics & Dance: Must be performed in bare feet.
-
Hall Safety: Socks must never be worn in the hall for any activity to prevent slipping.
-
Support: Shoes must be fastened correctly to provide appropriate ankle support and grip.
Staff Standards
Our staff lead by example, wearing appropriate PE kit and footwear to ensure they can respond quickly and safely to prevent student injuries. Staff also remove jewellery and lanyards during sessions for safety.
Jewellery & Personal Appearance
-
Earrings: Should be removed. If they cannot be removed, they must be taped. If taping is not fit for purpose, the child will participate in an adapted role (e.g., peer coaching) rather than being excluded.
-
Watches: All watches and fitness trackers must be removed for PE and after-school clubs.
-
Hair: Long hair must always be tied back with soft items.
-
Religious Items: Religious jewellery should be removed or made safe. Headscarves/ sports hijabs may be worn but must be secured tightly to ensure vision is not obscured.
Swimming & Water Safety

By the end of Key Stage 2, the National Curriculum requires all children to meet three specific standards. At King's Wood, we provide intensive swimming blocks to ensure our pupils are safe in and around water.
Our school has been awarded a Kitemark award for demonstrating Safe Practice in the delivery of our School Swimming Programme.
