Writing
We guide our pupils through an authentic writing process, transforming them from hesitant mark-makers into confident writers.
Drawing Club and Power of Reading
In EYFS children participate in ‘Drawing Club’ which offers the opportunity to develop language, imagination and early writing skills. Then, using the CLPE Power of Reading scheme, our writing is inspired by high quality literature. Research shows this approach helps children make an additional 6 months of progress.
The Writing Cycle
Pupils move from generating ideas verbally to planning, drafting in their Draft Books, then to editing and revision, and finally to publication in their Red Books (The Big Write) every two weeks.

Grammar and spelling rules are taught in line with Phonics teaching, national requirements, and the ‘Doodle’ spelling programme. These lessons are followed up with opportunities for pupils to apply their knowledge using target sheets to scaffold their work.
Handwriting is taught through the Read Write Inc. handwriting programme; this is a daily focus for children in Reception to Year 3, as we know that good handwriting habits are most effectively established at an early age. Children who require further intervention for their handwriting in Key Stage 2 will have individualised support.
Editing and Revision
Pupils use red and purple pens or pencils to bridge the gap between their first thoughts and a polished final piece. This process empowers them to take ownership of their work—refining the mechanics of their writing while critically evaluating its impact, cohesion, and emotional resonance for the reader.
