British Values at King's Wood

Pupils understand the fundamental British values. They learn about the rule of law, right and wrong, from the beginning of the early years. They learn to debate important issues sensitively and respectfully. Pupils know that it is important to listen to others’ opinions that may differ from their own.

Democracy

We empower our pupils to understand that their voice matters.

  • School Council: Members are elected by their peers to represent class views and influence school decisions.

  • Engaged Citizenship: We use assemblies and PSHE/P4C (Philosophy for Children) to discuss elections, current events, and the importance of a collective voice.

Individual Liberty

We foster an environment where children feel safe to make independent choices.

  • Rights & Responsibilities: Pupils explore their personal freedoms through "Pupil Voice" interviews and student-led initiatives.

  • Empowered Choice: We use the "language of choice" daily, helping children understand that they are the authors of their own actions and futures.

The Rule of Law

We instil a clear understanding of right, wrong, and the importance of boundaries.

  • The Golden Rules: Our school life is guided by a consistent behaviour policy and our "Golden Rules."

  • Fairness & Justice: Pupils learn that laws are there to protect us, reinforced by a balanced system of positive rewards and clear sanctions.

Mutual Respect

Kindness is the foundation of the King's Wood community.

  • Philosophy & Dialogue: Through P4C and assemblies, we teach children to listen to and value the opinions of others.

  • Standing together: Our Golden Rules promote a culture where bullying and discrimination are robustly challenged, ensuring every child feels respected.

Tolerance of Faiths & Beliefs

We celebrate the diverse tapestry of modern Britain.

  • Enriched RE Curriculum: Pupils explore a wide range of religions, fostering deep respect for the beliefs of others.

  • First-Hand Experience: We visit diverse places of worship and celebrate major religious festivals to build authentic understanding.
