Geography

Geography is about understanding the complex relationship between people and the environment; it is about understanding our place within the world. We aim to nurture curiosity and fascination about the world that will stay with our pupils for the rest of their lives.

Curriculum

"Geography underpins a lifelong conversation about the earth as the home of humankind."

We utilise Mary Myatt’s concept of "sticky baskets" to create a spiral curriculum. This ensures that ideas, skills, and events are not taught in isolation but are built upon year-on-year, allowing knowledge to "stick" and progress in depth.

  • Breadth and Depth: We focus on significant moments and specific features rather than trying to cover entire cultures superficially.

  • Vocabulary First: To ensure all learners can access the curriculum, most lessons begin with pre-taught vocabulary.

  • Local to Global: Our journey begins with the familiar (our school and High Wycombe) and expands to the furthest reaches of the Earth (Antarctica and the Global Climate).

EYFS: Understanding Our World

Children begin by exploring their immediate environment through nature walks and weather observations. They learn about "Where we come from" in High Wycombe and begin to recognise the world map.

Key Stage 1: The British Isles & Beyond
  • Year 1: Focusses on the Local Environment (High Wycombe), Weather & Seasons, and a study of Coasts.

  • Year 2: Expands to the four countries of the United Kingdom, global Climate Zones, and an in-depth continent study of Africa.

Lower Key Stage 2: Earth & Environment
  • Year 3: Investigates the Earth's Structure (rocks, fossils, and minerals), South America, and complex weather patterns.

  • Year 4: Focusses on the physical processes of rivers, the frozen landscape of Antarctica, and the power of Natural Disasters.

Upper Key Stage 2: Global Issues & Citizenship
  • Year 5: Tackles sophisticated human geography, including Migration & Refugees, Settlements, and a Regional Study of London and the South East.

  • Year 6: Investigates Climate Change, the diverse cultures of Europe, and the mechanics of Global Trade and Transport.

Fieldwork & Enquiry

Learning happens beyond the classroom. From pond dipping in EYFS to tracking changes in land use in KS2, our students are "historians and geographers in training" who question evidence and think critically.
