At Kings’ Wood School we aim to provide a happy and secure environment in which all children, at every stage of their development, can achieve the best of which they are capable.

Our school aims to:

  • Create an environment where everyone feels safe, secure and happy and where there is mutual respect

  • Provide opportunities for children and adults to actively engage in their learning and enable them to achieve their full potential

  •  Ensure access to a broad, balanced and stimulating curriculum that celebrates diversity and supports children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development

  • Enable children to be confident and independent learners with high self-esteem

  •  Inspire and motivate children to continue learning throughout their lives

  • Develop children’s ability to recognise their emotions, look after their own behavior and consider its impact on those around them.

  •  Promote healthy lifestyles to enable children to make informed choices

  • Have good communication links with parents and be actively involved in the wider community.

At this school, the health, safety and well-being of every child are our paramount concern.  We listen to our pupils and take seriously what they tell us.  Our aim is that children will enjoy their time as pupils at King’s Wood.

We want to work in partnership with you to help your child to achieve their full potential and make a positive contribution.

On rare occasions our concern about a child may mean that we have to consult other agencies even before we contact you.  The procedures, which we follow, have been laid down by the Buckinghamshire Safeguarding Team, and the school has adopted a Child Protection Policy in line with this for the safety of all.  If you want to know more about our procedures or the policy, please speak to the Headteacher or your child’s class teacher.

Learning to Read and Write

At King’s Wood we use the Read Write Inc Scheme, developed by Ruth Miskin, to teach reading and writing.

This is a scheme is based around the systematic teaching of phonics so children learn to blend their letter sounds quickly and so learn to read.  On joining the school in Reception the children quickly start learning their sounds and reading simple books – ‘Ditties’.  The children then move up through the levels moving groups as they progress.

They bring home the book they have been working on each week and we encourage you to read lots of stories to them at home to help build their vocabulary.
